BREAKING NEWS: At least 2 children injured in N.M. school shooting

On January 14, 2014, at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, New Mexico, a 7th grader came to school with a sawed off 12-gauge shotgun hidden in a bag. Upon entering the school’s gymnasium, he pulled out the shotgun and opened fire onto a crowd of students who were waiting to go to class. Amid the gunfire, a 12-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were critically wounded. One teacher in the gym was able to subdue the gunman before more shots were fired. The two critically wounded students were taken to a local hospital by ambulance and then air lifted to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas to be treated.

Authorities have yet to release a motive for the shooting; however, they are reviewing several social media outlets and interviewing witnesses for any clues. A 14-year-old classmate of the gunman stated the shooter gave a warning to friends and cousins to not go into the gym that morning and to go to the cafeteria instead. In addition, another student stated that the shooter gave a warning via social media 2 days before the attack writing, “Tomorrow will be the first Monday that will be fun for me lol never thot I’d say that.” That Monday, however, the school was closed due to plumbing issues.

This shooting comes only a month after a student opened fire inside a high school in Centennial, Colorado, killing himself and severely wounding a female student. That student would pass away a few days later as a result of her injuries.

On Tuesday, January 14th, two different schools in Texas received bomb threats from unidentified phone numbers. Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas received warning of a bomb threat during the early morning hours. Police arrested a 24-year-old male in connection to the incident. The bomb squad found two suspicious packages inside the suspect’s vehicle, one that required authorities to detonate after they were unable to determine the contents of the package. Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas was placed on lockdown as well after a bomb threat hoax.

On Monday, January 13th, a 19-year-old high school student was taken into custody after authorities found an improvised weapon known as a zip gun on campus.

The frequency and escalation of these critical incidents in our school systems should bring light to the slowly growing trend of preparation and prevention. Countermeasure Consulting Group (CCG) is one of the leading advocates of changing the methodologies and programs currently used in our school systems for active shooter events. CCG recently released a new campaign called “Just Say Go” in order to help parents and families to discuss what to do if ever involved in an active shooter incident. Click here to read the article.
