Happy New Year 2015 Chris Grollnek Sends

A Year in Review / 2014

This year has brought the good, the great and the best on so many fronts of my personal and professional life its time to share the news and welcome the New Year.  The year of 2014 would prove to be challenging and rewarding while masking the prolific affect it had on so many in my life and for this nation.

The year started (a little early; or late 2013) with the “official” retirement of my position at the company I started with very little five years ago.  That small company grew to a force in the active shooter prevention industry second to none. As my health took a turn and the calling to finish things at a standard bigger than myself or my dreams, major changes began to evolve into better serving opportunities.

Friends from years past would continue by my side as we would march our vision up the hill and through the corporate and other terrain most said few could navigate.  Pulling out all the stops, my continuous learning of the application(s) of Leadership, Integrity, Tenacity, Judgment and Tact took me farther than ever my initial vision.  The personal highlights of 2014 follow:

My friends and colleagues of that small company would part ways on to other ventures. I found ways to make others safer at a higher level than can be written. While I would traverse the course of active shooter prevention and media appearances, a serious set back in my health would bring me to a halt. This was not just painful physically, but mentally challenging to stop and be told the situation with my injury would be permanently debilitating. After four surgeries I was (surgically) paralyzed on the left side from the waist up only to endure more surgeries and infections. I continue to heal into next year but am refusing to halt my life’s work. It is not going at the pace I set but going just the same. There is plenty to be grateful for and I am looking forward to my new future in 2015.

Several concepts and ideas of work place safety, design, philological screening techniques and public area security for consumers have been my focus of learning for the past year. The level of approach for these these concepts would stem from the study of historical events. Lessons and practical application training would provide another perspective to my personal experiences to assist in the evolution of concepts from all around the world I am hoping will become household ideals in 2015.

Stopping and preventing horrific events continues to be my passion and focusing on the use of media outlets will ensure the proper sourcing of information to the general public. White papers and briefs written over the years will assist those responsible for our daily safety. The dedication of the past two decades of my life will continue in 2015, focusing on others and developing young leaders of tomorrow through mentoring.  Although my healing process continues slower than I would like, my motivation level to excel has never shown such resolve.

I am grateful for the friendships that have and will continue to develop through the years. Colonel “Jim” of the United States Army JAG Corps is one of the best leaders and people to bounce ideas off of and I know just how lucky I am to know him. His personal and professional friendship continues through the past decade and a half and his inspiration as a leader of warriors humbles me daily.

Lt. Colonel Dave “Bo,” Esq. friend and confidant as well as exceptional leader and business partner. Bo taught me concepts and ideas while keeping us on course. His personal decision to leave Countermeasure was made final in 2014 and we continue to remain friends.

Gregg  is a long time family friend that was the pinnacle piece to making sure Countermeasure was a success at the onset and I will always be grateful. Greg remains humble and continues to operate at a high level providing guidance and clarity when I need it most. As a SWAT Medic and full time firefighter in Northern Texas, Greg is highly respected in his field as a certified expert and instructor. I will always be indebted to Greg and it appears he will be the lead at CGPGMG, LLC should the principles behind the company chose that direction. Greg possesses leadership, friendship and clarity when things rarely make sense in dense situations and I cannot thank him enough for his friendship and professional advice.

Cody Cook, a Critical Incident Trauma Specialist, is well respected in her own right focusing her efforts in after active shooter event trauma response concepts. As a police officer in Northern New York, Cody is uniquely poised to be at the top of this occupational specialty so many striving for with no direction. Cody not only has the direction but also is well equipped to teach others how to get moving forward with assisting others.

Former Secret Service Agent William (Bill) Gage. As a former Presidential Protection Detail member and CAT Team leader, Bill continues his partnership with Countermeasure Consulting Group as a senior partner. As the brains behind the new; “Just Say Go” initiative for schools, there is no doubt Bill will make this program successful and transition into an even higher role with the company. Bill created this slogan and idea and I am happy for Countermeasure Consulting to help save kids in schools from the unthinkable.  Bill does all this while serving as a police officer with a small municipality in Northern Virginia.

Tawni Ichimura, a family friend is running Countermeasure now as the CEO and enjoys her new position at Travelers Insurance as a claims representative. Bill Worth from Chicago became the managing partner for Countermeasure in 2014 and after several successful proposals and site visits, the future looks bright for all three. The “Just Say Go” initiative is on the table at Parroco now and it looks as though it is going to get some traction.

Jim Parroco of Parroco Television in Chesapeake, Virginia and I began the concept of the PSA that was ultimately made public and released at large would provide the inspiration of serving at a higher level. Jim possesses the exceptional marketing practices that few can pull off as they come from his heart. Without Jim, the PSA we saw to completion and made adjustments afterward was prolific for this country and others. All flush and with all respect for Jim and his crew, they deserve all the credit I could give.

Note for perspective:

In 2013, Countermeasure Consulting Group, LLC (CCG) partnered with Parroco Television to produce a training video for sale to corporate and scholastic America with survival of an active shooter event in mind. After sincere reflection on the scope and nature of this terrible scourge, both companies felt that it was more important to quickly release the Active Shooter Prevention Training Video at no cost to any viewer. This unconditional and generous demonstration of leadership by doing the right thing worked well for both companies.  CCG went on to re-direct their efforts and officers shortly after my retirement and Parroco Television would enjoy the benefit of demonstrating what they could do with the ideas and motivation.  This mutual agreement of changing course postproduction continues to save people and it is unknown how many events have been prevented, as those metrics will never be known. The video continues to be available for web, YouTube, social media, streaming and network release.

Lastly, 2014 brought tears to my eyes as one of my original Marine Corps hero’s past on. The United States Marine Corps lost a former commandant, Carl E Mundy far too soon.

Former Commandant of The Marine Corps
2014 – We Lost a Great Marine and possibly one of the best leaders as The Commandant of the Marine Corps

This exceptional leader and I spent time together in the seas of a Continent far from home. General Mundy taught me humility and judgment in the course of an afternoon and again a year later before his retirement.  This exceptional man wrote my wife a personal letter with a note providing facts of life that few would pen.  The personal touch he would provide would stay with me through thick and thin and to this day, I strive to be more like him.

With all that has transpired in my personal life in 2014 one would think things ahead may be grim.  Nothing could be farther from the fact that I am more motivated for 2015 to effect positive change and safety for others even if “down one arm.” The professional changes were challenging from a personal level watching from the sidelines as CCG went through substantial changes. By the look of their website today and all that I worked to put together may actually still help in that venue for schools.  I wish them the best of luck in their personal and professional lives as they move ahead without my input or me for 2014.

Finally, CGPGMG, LLC will be announcing major changes for 2015 when the time is right. For now, it is up and running with free advice for all funded by private equity as a public safety venue, not for profit. Although I lack any control due to medical reasons, I have their permission to blog under their site and am grateful for that while I refocus my efforts to message “outside of the box” and heal. From this past year’s lessons and experience, I have more to offer than ever being taught by those who protect a much higher level than my experience. Taking my experience from inside two active shooter events, my time on SWAT, the police beat and Marine Corps Duty, we taught each other to forge concepts that are reduced to the simplest of terms.

In 2011, the news and media may have provided me the moniker “Active Shooter Expert,” but I plan to exceed the meaning of the name in 2015. My goal is to help others exponentially through messaging at every level of the problem from an institutional level down to basic concepts for households to discuss over dinner.   My vision is simple is better and my goals while stated are achievable! Even while I recover and enjoy my next steps, this industry should be excited because the changes I am planning will be shared for delivery and broadcast through a net of professionals each repsected in their own right.

God Bless,

Chris
