Limit Lines as they Pertain to Perimeter Security
The typical purposes for perimeter security is to ensure the first step in a layered approach of boundaries exist. Protection has several facets that include layering, architectural, environmental (natural or by design), and achieving this comes from planning. The purpose of any portion of security begins with the planning process to discover what is in need of protection.
Tactical units across the nation serve warrants everyday. The mission of a tactical team is the preservation of life during high-risk or critical incidents. To effectively conduct an operation, a team must focus on the target location. That would not be possible without building a layer of protection around the team so they can focus on the problem, their partner, and the solution. During any high-risk operation, those three elements are what matter most. “Limit Lines” are a great way to ensure the right people stay on point and the wrong people to not enter the perimeter, including suspects of the operation. A limit line is that point that a team must not let another pass at most costs.
To ensure the protection layer of perimeter security exists between the command post and target, newer members of the tactical team are generally assigned to this duty. The assignment to perimeter security is to get the operator familiar with the sights and sounds of their new assignment and to observe veteran officers conduct themselves during missions. Enforcing these boundaries offer several challenges including, the approbate level of force to ensure the integrity of the limit (this is the topic of the next post).
Officers without specialized training may not know where a “safe-area” is or may not be armed with the correct equipment should a breach be attempted. This is not to say patrol officers do not possess exceptional training. The reality is they are more than likely not aware of the teams functions and procedure’s during an assignment. This is obvious for the prevention of friendly incidents. The primary purpose of perimeter security is protection of human assets in place attempting to resolve a specific tactical problem. Psychological and technological methods are just as important as barriers for the public safety.
