Active Shooter in Another Hospital

Active Shooter in Another Hospital

On December 19, 2013, in Reno, NV an armed individual, carrying a shotgun, opened fire inside a urology office on the third floor of the Renown Regional Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon. The male gunman fired a total of five shots before turning the gun on himself. The incident was reported to local law enforcement at 2:05 pm, and officers were able to respond approximately 3-5 minutes later. A hospital employee, who was assisting patients just a floor below the incident, initially thought the sounds coming from the floor above was someone or something that fell on the ground. Soon after, she was notified by responding officers that the hospital was on lockdown due to an active shooter and no one was allowed to enter or leave the building.

The Renown Regional Medical Center is the largest hospital in northern Nevada and is comprised of two centers for Advance Medicine that house dozens of medical specialties and subspecialties. It is believed that approximately 100 people were inside when the shooting took place. Authorities are gathering as much information as possible by interviewing witnesses and searching the shooter’s residence.  The identity of the lone gunmen has not been released or confirmed by police. In addition, a motive and connection between the shooter and his victims has yet to be determined. Those closely involved with the investigation firmly believe that this was not a random act. Witnesses state that the gunman had several opportunities to open fire as he headed to the third floor of the hospital, passing several people.

Among the two wounded were Dr. Christine Lajeunesse, an employee of Renown Regional, and Shawntae Spears who was accompanying a family member to an appointment inside the urology office. The shooter’s single casualty, Dr. Charles G. Gholdoian, was described as a “well-liked” and “exceptional” doctor by his colleagues and patients.
